Blah Blah Love and War is yet another blast of vocal and songwriting greatness from Los Angeles-based trio The Rescues. The voices of principals Gabriel Mann, Kyler England, and Adrianne Gonzalez are angelic and, as they sing soundtrack material for TV shows like One Tree Hill, Private Practice, and Grey’s Anatomy, may seem instantly familiar to a lot of people.

The three singers and songwriters are an uncommonly strong musical unit and expertly extract loads of emotion and musicality from each of their songs. Emotion overflows from this record and seems to come from a different well this time out. As you might guess from the title, Blah Blah Love and War is a breakup album, a roadmap of the journey from lover to enemy most of us are all-too-familiar with. Heartbreak is often a fertile time and topic for creative souls and whatever happened to inspire these songs surely left a permanent scar or two.

“Did It Really Even Matter?” is an epic dysfunction and divorce song on the Fleetwood Mac Rumors level and paints a difficult yet powerful picture of love gone south. “Runaway” is a delicate gem about misplaced loyalty in the face of inflicted pain and “Never Let You Go” deals with standing strong while living with crippling uncertainty. Sonically, this is another helping of The Rescues’ typical ear candy and the group has a knack for finding and developing every possible vocal and instrumental hook in any song. There is always something going on but it’s never too showy or overblown.

Fans of modern singer/songwriter music need to get with The Rescues and Blah Blah Love and War is an excellent place to start. These songs are a perfect example of the Tom Waits quote about beautiful melodies telling us terrible things and have the power to take listeners deep inside the lives they’re about. It’s a tough descent but each level is just beautiful.
